Bollywood is currently facing a significant slump, despite the global success of films like Stree 2. While some industry veterans are sounding the alarm, others remain optimistic about the future. However, with the year drawing to a close and no concrete solutions in sight, the situation is becoming increasingly dire.

A group of prominent filmmakers recently convened to discuss the state of Hindi cinema. They unanimously agreed that the industry’s male stars need to step out of their comfort zones and embrace more challenging roles. Citing examples like Rajinikanth and Mammootty, who have recently taken on unconventional roles, the filmmakers emphasised the importance of experimentation.

At a recent panel discussion, renowned director-producer Karan Johar praised Amitabh Bachchan’s performance in Kalki 2898 AD, highlighting his ability to deliver action sequences at the age of 81. Other filmmakers, including Vetri Maaran and Pa Ranjith from Tamil cinema, Zoya Akhtar from Hindi, and Mahesh Narayanan from Malayalam, echoed Johar’s sentiments.

“All actors want to collaborate with directors who make unique and fresh films. But what happens is, they pick such directors and make them do their kind of films. Whereas when Rajinikanth calls Pa Ranjith, he wants to be part of a Ranjith film,” Vetri explained, earning praise from Karan for the Superstar. Rajinikanth and Ranjith worked together on Kabali (2016) and Kaala (2018).

Karan Johar jokingly admitted that he had tried to convince Vetri Maaran to make a “Vetri film” for Dharma Productions but was unsuccessful. This sparked laughter among the panellists, highlighting the importance of artistic integrity.

Pa Ranjith added that in both Tamil and Malayalam industries, major stars are more open to experimenting with different roles. The discussion then turned to Mammootty’s groundbreaking portrayal of a middle-aged homosexual man in Kaathal – The Core and his recent folk horror film Bramayugam.
