Actor Nishant Dahiya has made a name for himself in the entertainment industry with his versatile performances. Last seen in the Sanya Malhotra starrer Mrs., he essayed the role of Diwakar, Richa’s (Malhotra’s character) toxic and misogynistic husband. During a recent media interaction, he opened up about working in the Arati Kadav directorial and how he has been on the receiving end of hate because of his character. He added how he was shocked to get such extreme reactions and abusive messages from men rather than women.

Opening up about the reactions he received from men and women after watching the film, Nishant expressed that he never thought that the film would manage to hit a nerve with the Indian audience and become a trending topic of discussion on the internet. Discussing the same with Hindustan Times, he revealed that while he received “lovely messages” women who despite hating his character, loved and appreciated his work, he got the “most extreme reactions” from men.

Recalling the kinds of messages they sent him, the 34-year-old actor told the media publication, “Men have texted me saying, ‘You dumb***k actor, go and eat rat poison!’ ‘Die somewhere, you mother****er!’ If I had gotten this from a girl I would have understood but I am getting this from men.” He went on to add that there was “something they did not like about Diwakar and it touched a nerve in them somewhere.”

Nishant even got more bizarre messages which he couldn’t recall completely. They were something along the lines of, “You are not worthy of being an actor! Because if you were worthy of being an actor you would not have accepted this bad part. You don’t even have the sense of accepting a part.”

In the same interview he expressed how around “95% of the men are like Diwakar.” Shedding light on the same, the Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge actor shared that it is all about self-awareness and that many people are not aware of their actions. He questioned, “Do men recognize what they are doing? Diwakar is not a bad guy but he is just conditioned in a certain way that he does not see whatever he is doing. With Richa leaving and Diwakar marrying a second time it shows that Divakar and his family still did not realize that they were the problem. There is no recognition of what they did.”

Further in the interview, Dahiya revealed that he was sceptical about doing the film, as he had watched The Great Indian Kitchen and despised the male character a lot. However after discussions with the director he thought of doing the film and giving it his best shot.

An official adaptation of the Malayalam film, The Great Indian Kitchen, Mrs. had taken the internet by storm. The film tells the story of a young ambitious woman, who gets married into a strict patriarchal household. Within a few days of its release, Mrs. left the internet divided with a section lauding it for being a realistic portrayal of many Indian housewives, others slamming it for being a ‘feminist propaganda’ film and questioning Indian values.
